Throughout his adult life he tried to demonstrate his central belief in the unity of interests of African peoples by working towards the breaking down of artificial borders imposed by colonial countries. He mediated between Morocco and Algeria during the frontier conflict between the two countries and worked tirelessly to improve relations with the countries of Senegal, Upper Volta and Ivory Coast.

From to he was the deputy in the French National Assembly and was its first African vice president and became the mayor of Bamako.
Sudan became a self-governing state within the African French community and was renamed the Sudanese Republic. Keita received primary education in Bamako, the capital of the colony. After completing his education and teacher training, he taught at schools in Bamako, Sikasso, and Timbuktu, Mali. Keita became involved in politics as one of the founders of the Union of French West African teachers which advocated for higher wages and better working conditions for teachers throughout French West Africa.
In the s he joined a communist study group and in he helped produce an anti-colonial magazine. In October ofhe joined the African Democratic Rally party and soon afterward was elected major of Bamako the capital of French Soudan. In he was elected to the territorial assembly and re-elected in and
