He resumed design work inworking for the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Food, designing posters encouraging civilians to ration food and grow their own vegetables at home. In he produced Posters for the Blackouta series urging pedestrians to take care during the Blackout, when street lights and car headlights were turned off to hinder German bombers in identifying their targets.

In he established his own studio, Hans Schleger and Associates. Schleger's commissions included designing a logo for the Design Centre in London's Haymarket and he continued to work on corporate identity projects throughout the s, including with MacFisheries and Finmar He also designed new logos for the department store, John Lewis and for the Edinburgh International Festival.

Inwith limited English, very little money and no contacts, Schleger went to New York where he worked as a magazine paste-up artist and freelance advertising designer. He adopted the signature Zero, a wry comment on his status as a designer. Three years later he returned to Berlin to work for the German office of W. Schleger did much to spread the visual language of modernism in Britain, one example is the famous London Transport bus-stop sign commissioned by Frank Pick in Access detailed sales records for overartists, and more than two decades of past auction results.
